My friend's visa expired a few years ago. Is there some way I can sponsor her so that she can stay legally in the USA?

no u can't sponser, the only want she can stay legaly is to get married to a US citizen, since she brake the imigration law (overstayed her visa) she will not be elegible for any kind of sponsership for example H1B or she can't also get a student visa F1
good luck

No. Depending on the visa. If its a tourist visa, she needs to go back and re-apply for a new visa.

If she is here on a work visa she needs to get the company she is working for to begin the sponsorship process.

But in the end, if her current visa is expired she is here illegally and can be deported and never allowed back if she is caught by immigration.
