if you are a good student, you feel like society says you have to go to college, i am in this situation

i want to look into trades, especially drafting, possibly from a technical school but everyone is assuming i'm going to a 4 year university and i feel like i'll let them down because most people in my extended family went to 4 year colleges (one went to a 2 year and one didn't go)

my parents call technical schools "refridgerator repair schools" even though they know nothing about them and that is just one program the school offers

is anyone else in a similar situation

does anyone have advice

the link above shows a program at a school i was interested in

i have done research and it seems like all you need is a 2 year degree to be a drafter

Sorry but I have to agree with your folks. I worked in a technical recruiting firm for 6 years. Every employer wants a 4 year degree. You could go to the tech school but will have less of a chance at getting the better paying jobs, and more difficulty getting hired. Better to get the degree now than find out you need it after the tech school. Best of luck

The school program looks really interesting and it sounds like you are ambitious person, not lazy teen who hates school.
Well,I understand this is the school and career you would like to start and I admire you for that. Just remember that this school offers only Associate degree. If you really like it, you should try to talk to your parents. Explain them that you don't want to waste your time in regular college learning stuff you won't use in the future. This school concentrates on specific classes that you need to take and pass in order to have that specific degree.
Then you can go to work. As an inexperienced person you won't be paid very well but that gives you a chance to gain experience and go back to obtain your graduate degree. Just think about it: you will be doing what you like and will be paid for it very good.
I think, that's what your parents have in mind. They just want you to have a good education and maybe they are afraid that you will get your Associate degree and won't do anything else. Tell them, that's not true (I'm assuming you are thinking about Graduate degree someday?)

I hope, you have understanding parents and they will support you in whatever you decide.

Good Luck

the fact that you did the research is very good. you should arrange a sit down meeting with your folks and let them know that you would like to go to a trade school, and why. present them with the pros and cons of both a two year school and a four year school. just try to show them all the reasons why you choose one rather than the other. if your parents and understanding people, they will support you no matter what.

You cannot live your life as an adult for other people. You need to make decisions for yourself and then stand up for them. Eventually the rest of the family/friends will figure it out and support you. That looks like a good program you are interested in. And tell your family refrigerator repairmen make a LOT of money, lol... at least they do in the states.

i think you're lucky that you're family is able to afford to send you to a college - you can learn drafting there too and make more $$$ with a degree.
