The Yamato had thicker armour, but the Iowa class ships had better fire control due to superior gunsights etc. It's pretty much a toss-up IMHO.

The Iowas. The Yamatos 18 inch guns were bigger than the Iowas 16 inch guns, but the 16-inchers had a longer range, so they could hit the Yamatos from further away. Didn't that actually happen a couple times during WWII?

Well the Yamato was a bigger ship but who wins a battle has alot
to do with who's in command, who's doing the fighting, and a bit of luck.

I always wondered who would also 18" shells from the yamato versus 16" from Iowa class. It would be one helluva slugfest!
