Don’t tap your pup’s nose to stop biting. Why? You will cause the pup to become handshy. If you expected a person to shake your hand and they slapped your face instead and next day they shook hands and the next time….. what would your response be? You want your pup to relate positively to you, not to be fearful of the hand that may be feeding it, grooming it, putting on the lead, etc.
Bite Inhibition
Dogs must learn bite inhibition, ie not to bite fully. In a pack of other dogs, it is important not to damage your relatives or other pack members when playing. How strong a play bite is depends upon the feedback obtained by the dog from the “bitten” animal: if the “bitten” animal bites back or yelps or stops playing then it was too hard.
Unfortunately for humans, dogs’ skin is thicker than human skin especially around the neck and head area (where dogs tend to grab other dogs).
If you wait until your pup has bitten your skin then your reaction is to pull away, the dog has learnt only that it can make you dance. You should react when the pup grabs your clothing, including shoe laces, etc. Don’t shout and dance about. Why? The pup learns to make you more exciting and interesting and is rewarded. Do yelp and close down, stop interacting and stop looking at your dog. Become immobile. After all, your playmate has hurt you so why should you continue to play? After a period of one minute, normal activity can resume.

dog breeder/trainer since 1968... Every pup I have sold has been housetrained and well mannered. In 38 years of training pups, of many breeds, giant to tiny, I have NEVER had to cause pain to train them.

Here is the web address of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors, they advocate cruelty free training.
Since you are sensible enough to realise that hitting your dog is not training I doubt if you want to give him an electric shock either.
I agree with using a distraction. Also, fold your hands to your ides and turn your back on him. Once he learns that biting makes you withdraw he'll be less likely to do it.
Also, some dogs are just more mouthy! Try to find something you can give him to keep his mouth busy, he might just like having something in his mouth.
If you can possibly get to dog training classes I'd recommend it; puppy trainers are really good at showing you how to deal with this kind of thing - -its not choke chains and Heel at that age.

If I see one more person advocating the use of electric shock collars I will scream, and start reporting the lot of you for abuse.
Shock collars may well be The Trendy Thing To Use At The Moment, Just Like That Bloke Off The Telly, but you do not know the first thing about training dogs.
Let me give you a hard as nails Rottweiller with an attitude and a shock collar and see how you get on the second time you try to put it on its neck. With run down batteries.
This is A PUPPY and DOES NOT NEED A BL**DY SHOCK COLLAR. It needs proper training.
If you cannot even describe the behavioural mechanism by which your preffered method works then you have not earned the right to advocate it.
If you have never done any more than be an armchair expert, dont advocate the use of shock collars.
Proper training takes skill, knowledge and precision timing, it takes self control and a lot of other things they don't have time to tell you about in a half hour telly program.

get one of those collars that shocks them. you have a remote and just sit back and discipline your dog without laying a hand on it.

also, that way he won't associate it with you, he'll just go 'whoa! there's a force out there that must not want me biting people! Wow! i think i should stop.' if you hit him he'll just go, 'well, next time i'll just be faster or do it when you're not around.'

it's worth a shot.

What on earth does "without laying a hand on i" mean? And who/what is rocky?

this is very serious. This dog needs help froma qualified canine behaviourist stat. If this dog hurts anyone it could be dead within a year. I'd advise putting a muzzle on the dog when out until you get the problem sorted. this is very dangerous.

When he bites, you have to tell him no. And RE-DIRECT HIM.
That is the most important thing. If he is nibbling on your hand, stop petting him, and give him one of his toys. Dont pet the dog when he is biting. ignore him until he behaves then reward him for being good.
