Here is a good way to save them:
Peel and slice your onions to fill a large crock pot. Chunk a stick of butter in small pieces over the top, turn on low and cook for 12-14 hours.
Divide into zip lock bags and freeze!

My family always freezes onions, wild ones though. They always put water in the bag, then they put them in the freezer. I would imagine it would be the same with other onions, although I never tried it though.

I'd chop them up first and freeze them. They have frozen onions in bags in the grocery store.

I do all the time. When you've chopped more than you need for a recipe, wrap in some plastic wrap, and stick in a ziploc. Also I do this with celery, because I never use it all before it goes bad. Sometimes the same with baby carrots.

yes and they don't have to be cooked. Put them in a Glad freezer bag or in a tupperware container.

you can freeze them for soups and stuff because when they thaw they are real soggy.
