For those who say you are still alive when you sleep because your brain and heart etc still function----but, you are only aware of that because you learnt it when you were awake. You are not aware of any of this when you sleep. You are not aware you have a body. You are not even aware you are dreaming until you wake up. So, what is the difference between being asleep and being dead?

If awareness was the criterion for being alive there would be a lot of people walking around with their eyes open who were dead. Anyway I would argue that you are aware at some level when you are asleep. Haven't you ever had a dream and been aware that you were actually dreaming not awake and then you wake yourself up. Also during dreams you incorporate external sounds and textures into your dreams so you must have some awareness. (For instance the alarm clock going off and dreaming of a fire bell).

I have known that i was dreaming in my sleep , There are signs that if you pay attention will clue you in. Like... Your really not fighting in jello. Oh that's right I can't really fly. etc.
That's not to say that there aren't dreams that seem real. But for the most part they are snip its of imagination .
From what I have heard over the years there are many levels of sleep from the catnap to coma, but I know of only one level of dead.
And I'm in no hurry to find out the difference !

Nothing is different. The brain lives for about 6 minutes after death, In a dream sequence, 2 weeks is only a millisecond of actual time. So after your body dies you are stuck in a dream sequence for 6 minutes. THATS A FREAKIN ETERNITY

If you walked over to your Dad in the middle of the night, would he look dead? No, you would see his chest rising and falling -- this we like to call breathing. It means he's alive. You know that color we have in our cheeks during the day? Yeah, notice how it never seems to dissipate into a pale-ish blue one while someone's sleeping. Scientists have done studies on people who are sleeping -- they can see on special machinery your brainwaves. It's true -- the usual ones that are active during the day tend to subside, but others just rise up in place of it: subconsciousness.
