If you want to play avi files on Windows Media Player 9 then you will need to add some codec so WMP can read and play these files. Please refer to Chris Lanier's article on how to install and you the codecs.

you need a new codec pack. Try downloading a divx/xvid codec. Also you might want to look into codec packs like the Matroska codec pack (my favorite, that solved pretty much all my problems with videos for the last 2 years)

All of the above answers are correct. You need the appropriate 3rd party codec to play this type of file in WMP. I just wanted to add my favorite codec pack: Ace Mega Codec. It's free.

You should get sites were you can download codecs that should make the file work.

try updating your codecs befor trying to play it, i think that the option is under the tools menu in windows media player.

i think you just need to download a new version of Windows Media Player. try Windows Media Player 11 it is a new one..but still in BETA version.but who care?just use it,really awesome just like a Vista one~
