It was Anselm who devised the ontological argument, not Aquinas. Aquinas criticized it, as did Guanilo and Kant. The link goes to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy's entry concerning the argument.

in general:
each cause has an effect but the first cause of all had no effect because a chain reaction has to start somewhere. that place that it starts would be the creator.
he saw that the universe seemed to run on cause and effect, each effect having a cause, in an ongoing process. we would call this a chain reaction today.
a chain reaction must have a cause, before the chain reaction can be.
that initial cause is god.

I know it had something to do with mixing Aristotle and Catholic Doctrines and somehow proving God's existance...but I just feel like an idiot reading your question.
