The comments for laptops of 08' are a million. HP Pavilion dv5t 2. Sony VAIO Z sequence 3. Acer Aspire One 4. Dell Inspiron 1525 5. HP Mini 1000 in my opinion i'd pass with an HP. Have had alot of folk like those and good comments on them.

toshibas tend to heat up quickly and I've heard that HP doesn't last very long before u start getting problems. Don't know about Siemens.
IBM has good stuff, but is a bit pricey. Dell is cheap, but u gotta really know what u're buying because they sometimes stuff in low quality parts (for example a crappy celeron instead of a pentium).
I have a customized compaq (kinda part of HP, but I'm pretty sure they have different standards), but you also need to know what u want with the Dells. The laptop is good the way I customized it, but the size of the laptop is a bit bulky, and their customer service is not all that great.

I bought an Averatec (canadian made) at walmart! its past 2 years and still good. I added a soney ericson gc83 card for cingular mobility, it is expensive, but it is the best. the lap top was about $800,The card was 450/and 80$mo.for unlimited online time .most japanese brands are good. Don't know what moving to India will do to IBM, so i'd be careful with them for a while.. Price usually leads quality, whatever brand you buy.. Your school may have some good used at the book store..

All of these companies have ups and downs. HPs are great laptops because they are built to be versatile. Toshiba are god laptops and stay cool better then some of the others. ACER is another good company the mixes cooling with size. Ultimately, do some research. I have placed some sites for you to look at in the source list.
