My mom needs to buy her dad a birthday gift and she's asking for suggestions. He has pretty much everything that he could want in reference to his interests, so he's always difficult to shop for. Does anyone have any unique ideas?

Somewhere to keep it all? (Sorry.. couldn't resist).

Just about every man in my family falls into this category, especially my hubby. He's the type that if he wants something, he's already gone out and bought it, and if he hasn't bought it, he doesn't want it. The best thing I can recommend is something he doesn't know he'd like. Something personal.

Something like a really nice framed picture of your mom and you (and any siblings you have) would probably be nice. Especially if he doesn't see you guys a lot. Or memorabelia from your mom's childhood. For my dad's 70th my sister made him a scrapbook of his life. She wrote letters to all our aunts & uncles and asked for copies of old photos, etc. and starting with a copy of his birth certificate she worked right up to pictures of my son. It was something he certainly didn't need, but probably one of the best gifts he's ever had. Though obviously something like that takes a lot of planning and time.

I live on the other side of the planet from my dad, so my choices are often limited to shipping availabilities, but since I live close to where he served when he was in the army (and he's now so far away from it) I visited the town, and was able to find a history book about his regiment and the town it was based in, which I know he really enjoyed.

It could even be an opportunity to introduce a new hobby or interest to your grandfather. If he has everything he wants for his hobby, why not a starter kit for something he's not tried, but may have shown an interest in before?

Mostly though, I'd say probably time. As we get older and our families spread further apart, time together is the most valuable gift you can give. Why not take him out to a nice restaurant for a lovely dinner? Get as many of the family together as you can to enjoy it. Or go do something with him. Like if he likes going to the theatre, buy tickets and go with him. If he likes going to sporting events, take him to a ball game.

I like to go with a man's hobbies or interests. For hunting and fishing type guys I find unique gift ideas at http://www.cabinfevergifts.com
Stuff like HUGE fishing lures, sports themed gift baskets and antler knives and fun signs...

For some reason men do seem to be a bit harder to buy for in general, in my opinion.

My dad is the same way so I always go with a novelty gift. He has a room in the house that is all for himself and he keeps the oddest things in there. Some past gifts I've ogt him were a disco ball, Madonna's Sex book... things like that.

Bosch Pocket Driver - this tool fits in your hand has great power, fits in a tool belt and cannot be broken. You can drop this two stories and go to pick it up and it will work just like new. Great for the handyman and home repair. Absolutely great gift for dads

Have her take him on a date. Dinner in a nice restaurant, a movie or something that he would enjoy. And a gift....a card telling him all that she has learned from him...and how much she loves him plus a family portrait.
