When a movie has been ripped it means that it has been converted into some type of avi or mpeg format. If you put a dvd in your computer and browse to it in my computer you'll notice that it is devided up into several files so that a dvd player knows how to view it. The ripping process combines them into one file that takes up less space and is easier to access.

If you download full dvd's in their original format you won't have to convert them, but they'll take up a lot more space and they can be tricky to play sometimes.

Hello,
I don't download movies but, rent from netflix. I assume that ripped is the same as pre-burned and therefore doesn't need to be re-encoded. Once the encoding is done and saved to disk you should be able to burn multiple copies.(for your own use, don't sell them, it then becomes a crime) Full DVD movies are encrypted and these software programs decrypts them, put it on your hard drive so you can then burn to disk.
