Yes, we can obtain protein and even vitamin B12 from plant produce such as beans and soya products. The original diet was fruits and after the fall God instructed man that the herbs of the field would be meat for him to eat. It was not until after the Noah's flood that you had meat eating. Thou shalt not kill (murder) i believe also goes for the animals too which we should take care of.

God put some animals on Earth to be eaten, I can't control how people kill these poor creature, although I wish I could. But you have to realize the people who are eating the meat aren't the cruel ones, and we would like animal cruelty to stop as well. However I was raised on meat, and I intend to eat it for the rest of my days. I am very much so against cruelty to animals, and I try my best to stop it, but one thing I will not do is give up meat.
"Vegetarians will NEVER make a difference
in how animals are made into food.
if you wanna do it, do it.
I, in the meantime, will be snacking on
some salami, or having a roast beef sandwich, etc.
i know there's cruelties and horrible things,
but we can't change that.
vegetarians have been around for decades.
i bet you next you're gonna feel bad about
using paper cause of the horrible ways they
kill the trees, right?"
That is a quote from my friend when I was being pressured to become a vegetarian, by careless people who were trying to change me, well now you know what I could change, but I won't!

Do you remember in the bible after Adam and Eve sinned and realized they naked? An animal died for them in order to use the skin for their clothing. Then, there was the passover:
"Tell the community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must hare one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the people of the community of Isael must slaughter them at twilight. Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the the houses where they eat the lambs. That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast." Exodus 12:4-8

While it's true that some animals suffer (like geese, for their liver), a lot of animals live a perfectly normal life right until the day when they get killed in a fast and (probably) painless way.
I for one have no problem with meat from cows or pigs, because I know their suffering is kept to a minimum. I do however object against hunting, or the geese example, or any other form of making animals suffer needlessly.

The angels that created meat animals do not mind that they are used for meat. however, there has to be more civilized ways of killing the animal for meat than using a sledge hammer to the head.
slightly off topic, I beleive animals have souls and i think those that do not have no compassion for animals just because they walk on four legs are furry and dont live as long as a human does not mean they do not have a soul/spirit too.

Its the circle of life, the are other animals in the world that eat other animals for protein, but they have to hunt for it.We asd humans can go both ways Herbavors or carnivors or both.Forunately we are lucky enough to have inteligence and we decided why hunt when we can just breed them here, and not have to worry about hunting any more especially in the winter time when it gets too cold to try to find animals that are trying to stay warm themselves. It was mostly for survival.I agree that yeah , its a little excessive now. There is sooooooo much waste( i work in the meat department at a grocery store). Its sad to see every thing that we throw away, but unless you convince the world that its a bad thing to have steak readily available there's not much that can be done about it,and tofu ia definately an aquired taste

IIt is not immoral to eat meat...it is part of our food chain, just as we are part of it, too. As far as humans being "civilized" I have yet to see actual proof of this, except possibly in the Aboriginal example. Animals even live in more civilized societies than we do...have you read a history book lately?
personally steer from meats as much as possible...there's just some that taste too good...however, the reason was because of the growth hormones (steroids) & antibiotics & just plain garbage (including the same animals that got sick & died at the slaughter houses) that people started to feed their herds. Hasn't anyone noticed that American meats are very unwelcome elsewhere--even in starved 3-world countries? Yet we continue eating, gaining, becoming more unhealthful & remain ignorant to the ill effects of these practices & the loss of export economy that we used to have. Our children will show the greatest errors of our ways...so sad.

Dont care about the pain the animals face... killing for meat is done by carnivores too...its a part of the ecosystem(food pyramid)...we are going to face the pain too sometime in our lives
Be worried about the number of animals killed... human population is rising so fast that more animals are killed for meat...instead of wasting your mind about the pain animals face, try doing something which can help control population explosion...less population, less animals killed...

Perhaps it is worth considering the number of animal lives which are lost through deforestation for the growth of soya (and remember that there is no longer such a thing as non-GM soya in the world) before being overly concerned with the cow which is slaughtered.
The problem is that, although an acre of soya produces more protein than an acre of beef, the acre of soya cannot support any other life, whereas an acre of beef can provide nitrogen, reduces carbon dioxide (grass is more effective at breaking down co2 than trees) and allows for other life within that field.
Added to this areas (such as the mountainous regions of Wales) where arable farming is not possible, yet tons of lamb is produced. Unfortunately, as things stand, we cannot produce enough protein on our planet without eating meat and, more imoprotantly, vegans are generally responsible for more animal lives per capita than carnivores.
I do not believe in cruelty to animals. I do eat neither crated veal nor fois gras, but we need to eat meat, as a race, to survive.
An alternate issue might be that there are other elements to modern living which are far crueller than eating meat. Take, for example, Compact Discs. CD production causes a level of CO2 emmission which accounts for more bird lives than KFC. Cars kill more animals and destroy more habitat than MacDonalds. One short flight has more effect on wildlife than a hunter with a gattling gun could cause in a year.
Yes, it may seem unpleasant to kill an animal, but there are more ways to kill a beast than to slaughter it - what you don't see is no nicer for it than what you do and surely it is better to be killed in an abbattoir than to starve to death, to be killed for meat than to be killed just because we need a layby?
I eat meat - but i do not ask others to do anything I would not do myself, thus, as i would shoot a pheasant, I eat pheasant, but as I would not force feed a goose, I do not eat fois gras. I find vegans difficult to respect, killing so much foreign fauna for the sake of domestic farm animals, but everyone has the right to their own lifestyle choice, be they vegan or steak lover.
Let's all show a bit of tolerance for other people's customs.

God gave us the animals to provide us with the food that we need. Being civilized does not mean we have to stop eating meat.
