well this isnt really a spell....but if you take a lit candle and go outside at night and sit by a tree and chant "Uhgugsut...Myyugmoot" 3 times and then talk to the spirits like say "i dont mean to hurt you but if you are here then blow out my candle"
the candle will really blow out i tried it
try it for yourself

I think that the power of spells come from within the person "casting the spell". The actual act is just a way for that person to build, focus, and then release the energy within themselves. Casting a spell is symbolic. You can sprinkle eye of newt into your caldron all day and nothing will happen. You can also write your own "spell", or pray, or just focus and visualize your desired result and have great results if you are able to focus your energy.

When casting spells, one should know what one is doing. Otherwise, be prepared for it to backfire. You should understand the law of cause and effect, first. To answer your Q...yes..spells do work.

Oh Fcuk, yea. My mum said a spell over a wart of mine. It was a big one and it fell out three days later. Oh, Fcuk, yea, there's powers all right.
My advice is keep away from it, as we don't want to open a portal for that kind of Sh*t.
