maximum effective range at a point target is 550 meters. at an area target is 800 meters. Maximum range is around 3500 meters (meaning you can hit something that far out, but it's a big crapshoot).

In the marines we were taught that the max effective range was 460 meters. That was with the m16a1 but the a2 has different sights, heavier barrel, different rifling twist, and a 62 grain vs. a 55 grain bullet from the a1. At my last qualification I put 5 out of 10 rounds in the head at 500yds with the a1 ooorah!

Max. Effective range on the A2 is 550m IIRC, but the Army doesn't qualify on paper anymore; we qualify on the "trainfire" system, which is a known distance range with popup targets placed at various distances. The longest range you will have to shoot in an Army training environment is 300m, unless you go to Squad Designated Marksman or Sniper school.

The maximum effective range is 800 metres. The bullet loses too much power beyond that range.

500 yards, at least I think so. Don't the marines make you go out from 500 yards when you're getting checked out on the rifle?
