Cherem = the total, permanent casting away of the person. They were never to return and it was not limited to a ban from the synagogue; the person had to leave permanently. This was for extreme instances only.

Niddui = a seven-day purification ban imposed after three warnings were given.

Nezifah = a one-day ban from annoying or offending a person. This was mild punishment.
