late in the model year if you dont care about equiptment or color. The popular versions of the car of your choice will be gone by this time but the savings will be great.
If you are particular about transmission, color and equiptment then when you find it is the best time.
Remember factories stop making current year models about May or June so selection is limited after that.

Usually when next years line of vehicles start arriving at the dealership. This is the time when you get a good deal on the previous years model, as dealers want to make room for the new arriving models. Depending on the make of the vehicle, these times will vary, but it usually starts happening around August. Hence, when the 2007 models start arriving around that time, you could pick up a good deal on a 2006 model. It's still new, with full warranty.
As the months progress, the dealers will be more desperate to sell the previous years models. However, the selection becomes limited and if you wait too long, they may all be sold.

End of November. You can either get the new models, or last years models at a much lower price. Plus the sales guys want to sell as many cars as possible so they can make money for Christmas.

fall is the best time if you can wait. last years stock all over the place and the new ones are coming fast.
the problem with this strategy is that they previous model year cars are limited because they quit making them in june. You get what's there, even if it's yellow with big pink dots on it. Very little choice in options left.

when you need one...
No, seriously - I think it depends on the type of car you want. For example, if you want a convertible - fall or winter would be the best because the prices will drop due to bad weather. Same goes for a motorcycle, etc...
Other than that late in the year is what I've always heard...

I would strongly recommend you get Remar Sutton's book "Don't Get Taken Every Time" from the library before you buy a car. Also read Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace books about leasing... don't lease a car.

Usually the fall, I would say October, is when a lot of the new ones go on the lot and the last years are reduced to make room for them.
