O my gosh that is erie. I thought that I was the only one. I think it is an illness because even when my kids and I are at the table, and we are silent, while they are chewing, it is killing me and I don't want to give them a complex or make them feel bad,s o I try to shut my mouth about it, but it is hard. Someone said just ignore it - I can't - it is like someone is driving a nail through my head. In public it is bad because I just want to scream chew with your mouth close or chew softer. I can't explain what it does to me. I just HATE it with a raw passion. It really un-nerves me to a high degree.
It is not their fault and although it is not mine either - it is my problem and I recognize that so i have to find ways to minimize its affect on me. I simply try not eat around others or if I do, I eat along with them so that my chewing drowns out their chewing. I can't stand slobbery eaters either.

sorry dude, some times there aint no easy way-but in their own interests ( they may eat within the hearing range of a future boss,or some one they fancy-and then wonder why it didn't happen) as you sit down to eat (this is your duty to civilisation) you say ,hey! i tried a new cafe the other day and there where people chewing so loudly-like their hands were tied behind their backs and they were being forced to eat like animals, from a bowl; i had to leave it made me feel so sick-awful isn't it when people don't even know why they get looked down on!? then tuck into your meal,it may not be a total cure in all cases but when i do it-atleast i know i tried gently-if that don't work-tell em stop being so lazy cos they they across like an animal !good luck in doing your bit to help those poor blind peeps.x

You should have a open discussion about the proper way to chew, if you are among family or a small group you should be able to speak open without hurting anyone feelings.

If this only happens at family meals, you might try talking to your family about it.
If you can't do that, can you have a song or something that you concentrate on during the meal? How about suggesting some nice music to play during the meal?

I have the same problem, especially with those that chew gum, too. I do my best to ignore, however, especially being family, you have to talk to them. I try to reinforse positive manners at the table. When I am at wits end, I will call someone out one it and ask them to "remember their manners. With company, forget it. It will sound rude or ridiculous. Consider who to invite when dining!

Beat them to a pulp so they eat their food through a straw and then there will be no more chewing.

This is called "sensitiveness to some peculiar sounds"
For this there is no remedy, but to ignore and become insensitive.
Or, leave the place.
