You shouldn't drink 'softened' water and most set-ups have a by- pass, so how can I make my tea with the hard water and not get the deposit on the pot?

After fighting the mineral buildup in teakettles for years I learned something so simple, from my mother-in-law no less. Bless her! Simply drain the water out of it each evening when you do dishes and wipe it out. And should you have some build up as everyone has said, vinegar works great. Add a cup to the pot, bring it to a boil and then let it set for awhile.

Havw to agree with JD on this one. Run about 3 cups of white vinegar through your coffee maker to clean it out, tastes WAY better even with crumby tap water. Do the same with your tea pot. Bring a few cups of white vinegar to almost a boil, let is simmer and rinse it out. this should dramatically improve the taste. Also, using filtered water would not be a bad idea.

Once a week, take some white vinegar and water fill the teapot and let it sit for about thirty minutes, rinse out good, also good for coffeepots and irons.

I wouldn't know how to prevent it, but a safe, healthy way to remove it is to use salt and ice: put enough ice to cover the bottom of the pot and pour salt over it, then swish the pot in a circular motion until all, or most, of the hard water comes off. Empty the pot of the ice/salt and rinse really well with hot water.

use distilled water or at least bottled water. Any true tea drinker would scorn you for using tap water!! For shame!
