First of all why is it always assumed Muslims are Arabs? I am from Turkey, and I am Muslim. Second covering our head doing all the things we do is by choice. I am a very open person. I do not cover my head. I don't wear those baggy clothes. I have a very good career (Application Programmer). And I am not depressed. I make my own choices.
For those people who don't know anything about Islam:
- Lesson number one: not all muslims are Arabs.
- Lesson number two: islam is an open minded religion. Freewill is the number one rule.
- Lesson number three: Islam value woman the best out of all the religions.
-Lesson number four: Just beacause we are muslim does not mean we are not modern.
- Lesson number five: Don't talk about something you don't know. Pick up a book and read.
Thank you cheymain for bringing up this issue.

If you went back in time and 200 years and read somewhere a person saying: "Black people aren't oppressed in America, sure in some parts of the south they are slaves but that is because of southern culture that's not how the rest of country treats them." Would that make it okay?
The Media may spot light the Arab counties that oppress women, but it's not like the Media is making up what these countries do. It's not like CNN is going to these country and telling the governments to kill and behead women, to force women to cover them selves from head to toe or be thrown in jail. Fox news isn't telling these countries to keep women from voting or driving or working or even going outside unless accompanied by a man. No these countries do it on their own.
So what? right. Just because a few countries do it most probably don't. It's still bad, it's still horrible. And the two things that make it worst are 1) that these countries do it meanwhile saying they are proud ISLAMIC countries. 2) Most Muslims turn a blind eye to this suffering saying things like "Well it may be like that there but it's okay over here."
As long as there is one place in the world where Muslim women are oppressed, if others Muslims let it continue, all Muslim women are oppressed.

Many people have said that Muslim women are oppressed, but only because they never read about Islam from Islamic sources, or they rely on what they hear on the media... they do not take the trouble to read.
If some one visits Islamic countries, even Arab Countries, he will find that most of the propaganda being said about women in Islam and in Arab world are too false and too far from being objective.

Americans view them as oppressed.
I was saddened to find out what "Liberating Arab Women" means to Americans.
I watched a T.V. documentary about how Americans want to get these women to take off their coverings and much, much, more..of course.
They held a "secret" beauty pageant there. They flew women in from all over the world. They had to dress as Arabs with the covering on the streets but when they got inside some building...they disrobed wearing skimpy clothes.
The thrill for them was that it was all a secret and against the law. They did have some local Arabic women that joined their beauty pageant.
The whole thing was very sad. Americans view these women as oppressed...trying to save them by having them get into sinful situations?? Focusing on their beauty?? Freedom by wearing clothes that will draw men away from their wives?
Americans view everyone as oppressed if they don't have to open freedom to have sex whenever they want to with whomever they want to...without any birth control to keep their actions to a minimum.
I hope the "American freedom" doesn't catch on. It will only destroy the Arabic family. I know the family is very important to them...I hope we don't ruin things for them.

During the downward cycle of Islamic Civilization, such teachings were not strictly adhered to by many people who profess to be Muslims.
Such deviations were unfairly exaggerated by some writers, and the worst of this, were superficially taken to represent the teachings of "Islam" to the Western reader without taking the trouble to make any original and unbiased study of the authentic sources of these teachings.
Even with such deviations three facts are worth mentioning:
1. The history of Muslims is rich with women of great achievements in all walks of life from as early as the seventh century (B.C.)
2. It is impossible for anyone to justify any mistreatment of woman by any decree of rule embodied in the Islamic Law, nor could anyone dare to cancel, reduce, or distort the clear-cut legal rights of women given in Islamic Law.
3. Throughout history, the reputation, chastity and maternal role of Muslim women were objects of admiration by impartial observers.
It is also worthwhile to state that the status which women reached during the present era was not achieved due to the kindness of men or due to natural progress. It was rather achieved through a long struggle and sacrifice on woman's part and only when society needed her contribution and work, more especial!; during the two world wars, and due to the escalation of technological change.
In the case of Islam such compassionate and dignified status was decreed, not because it reflects the environment of the seventh century, nor under the threat or pressure of women and their organizations, but rather because of its intrinsic truthfulness.
If this indicates anything, it would demonstrate the divine origin of the Qur'an and the truthfulness of the message of Islam, which, unlike human philosophies and ideologies, was far from proceeding from its human environment, a message which established such humane principles as neither grew obsolete during the course of time and after these many centuries, nor can become obsolete in the future. After all, this is the message of the All-Wise and all-knowing God whose wisdom and knowledge are far beyond the ultimate in human thought and progress.

I agree with you totally..... I will add some more things to it... If Islam really opressess women then why are there more women Muslim converts then men in America and Europe.
I am surprised, why so many people still feel that Islam opresses women. especially the answers to your question. It is just biased view because if American Ladies harken to the Islamic teachings then people in America will not find naked bodies to exploit and use them as sex tools...
West talks about women’s liberalization is nothing but a disguised form of exploitation of her body, degradation of her soul, and deprivation of her honour. Western society claims to have ‘uplifted’ women. On the contrary it has actually degraded them to the status of concubines, mistresses and society butterflies who are mere tools in the hands of pleasure seekers and sex marketeers, hidden behind the colourful screen of ‘art’ and ‘culture’...
I could write on and on but I know people do not like long answers so I request any aspirer of truth to write me to know the womens rights in Islam or open ..
video.google.com and write Womens Rights in Islam in search. I hope you will find enough meaterial to start your research.

You obviously don't read the News. In parts of Iraq they are now telling women NOT to drive their own car (you have to have a man driving it for you) or to use a Cell phone in public.
A model from Iran now faces up to 50 years in jail for posing in a Bra for a Madenform package.
And, what's all this about cutting the clit? That is a radical Muslim right, akin to cutting the foreskin by Jews and some Christians.
Why are women ordered by men with guns to wear a shawl. In some parts of Iraq they are required to wear a veil.
You ain't never going to get much of a sun tan that way!
The only water you'll feel is from the bath, no swimming in Red Sea!
How come women can't manage their own property without a male member of the family supervising.
You know, Christians did this to women back in the 1800 and 1900s. We changed around 1920, athough women still couldn't get easy Bank loans or Visa cards until around 1980.
Go to Iraq and live in one of those Extremist areas and see how you like it. See what happens when you drive your own car, open your own doors and use a Cell phone.
See what happens if your "man" dies and you have money and property, see who takes charge of that for you.
You might be able to speak up and argue, but you have to ultimately obey or you get whooped and it is not a crime for a man to "discipline" a woman who is out of control in most Muslim states and in some Latin American Christians states.

Well i think lack of knowledge about Islam and the way people understand us..that make they think we are terrorist and backward..The arabs (most they refer to iraqis n palestines people) are backward because of their countries are in war and not economically stable..US has blockade iraq food supply (those days), so they hav to struggle to live..most of us only listen to one sided story for exmple what is happening in palestine, we tend to accuse the palestine muslim as terrorist and like to kill the israelies however, we didnt know tht their families have been killed and raped and slaughter beyond no reason by the regime zionist..
For me, respecting and learn other people religions no matter Islam, Christian, buddhist etc will teach us why they do this and why they cant do that..people will not act the way they are beyond no reason..their situation forced them to do so.
It doesnt mean u learn about Islam u want to convert into it, but u learn how to respect people norms and values..
good day

Let me be the first to say, you're very intellegent. MashaAllah!
I hope that Allah guides you to the truth, it seems as though you already have a lot of Muslim qualities,
indeed, it's sad to see that people misinterrpret. but what's even worse is when people dont read into the Quran themselves, and they go by what they hear from the media.
everything in Islam makes sense.
May Allah guides us all to his truth! ameen

Could it be that women get stoned for showing parts of their body in Muslim countries? Could it be that women are treated like cattle. The Quran is not filled with hate about women or even other religions. But it is viewed that way because of the people that are extremists and practice the religion that way.
With the exception of Buddhism, every religious writing including the Bible could be misconstrued. But most Catholics/Christians/Jews don't blow themselves up in the name of their God.
