He/she is looking for a spot that any other animals may have urinated. By urinating over that spot, the dog is 1) proclaim dominance (I peed on you) and 2) marking it's territory.

Because it is territorial. male dogs are more territorail, but i am not saying that females aren't. it is mainly because they want to be the alpha dog so if another dog has "gonee" in a specific spot, your dog will search for the spot and "go" on it. what this means is that area is not the first dogs area, but now your dog has taken over that area as his/her own.

They are looking for a spot that is their own. They sniff for odors from other animals so they know where to go or not to go.
