He had gunk in his ear, but the vet did not find mites. She cleaned it out really well, and it helped for a few days, but now he's scratching it again. Any ideas??

What kind of dog is it? Some dogs have a tendency to get a yeast infection in their ears. (Believe it or not) I had a Golden Retriever with that problem, and we had to clean his ears everyday with peroxide and medicine when he would get those infections.

If only one ear is bothering the pup then it is most likely something that has gotten into it's ear. A careful examination may reveal a grass seed or other foreign matter that can be cleaned out. Otherwise, wash the ear out well with hydrogen peroxide and dry it. See if the condition improves.
Your pup also may have picked up dog ear mites from another dog. Again, wash out well with perixide and after drying well, pour a tablespoonful of mineral oil in each ear and rub around well. This will kill the mites if that is the problem. Repeat in about a week.

Since the vet looked at it and cleaned it out it could be a rash or allergy that my not have appeared at that visit. Look for bumps on or in the ear(s). Try to see if he got poison ivy or oak. Or he may allergic to mosquitoes and could be reacting to a mosquito bite. Many human medicines can be used on dogs, but your vet will have to tell you the dose. If it's a rash or allergy check with the vet if calamine or benadryl gel is OK. They work great on me and my kids.

What kind of puppy is it? I had a standard poodle, some dogs like those, have alot of pockets in their ears and it is hard to keep them aired out and dry enough to keep from itchy infections. There is some kind of mixture that you can do with household products to dry them out. Call your vet or a groomer to see if they know what it is. Hope this helps.

Could be an ear infection. Let the vet check it out.
