As far as layout for the passenger, it's mediocre at best. I've been in and out of the Frankfurt Airport many times and found it's never taken more than 20 minutes to get anywhere within the airport. Try getting from one end of the Atlanta airport to the other within 20 minutes!!!

For Departures, if you know where your airline's ticket counter is located, it's actually fairly easy to get from teh counter to your departure gate.

Arrivals on the otherhand could use a little bit of work. If there is a gate change to the arriving of someone you are picking up, you might be walking those full 20 minutes.

As far as layout of runway configuration, it's a VERY nice set-up and operation there. Two east/west parallel runways, (7L/25R & 7R/25L) that are both approx. 13,128' long. And a north/south runway offset to the west that is used for departures only.

VFR aircraft (visual flight rules) movement is somewhat restrictive through the Frankfurt airspace. But with the primary function of the airport being commercial flight, it has to be. I had the privilege of being apart of a panel that evaluated the VFR aircraft routes through the Frankfurt airspace in 2001. I was working as the Training Supervisor for an air traffic control facility a military airfield 11nm to the west of the Frankfurt airport at the time.

Hope this helps!

You should try landing an aircraft at Frankfurt. That can be quite challenging. They have very specific rules about what airspeeds you are supposed to be at along the approach. I have found that when in the pattern, moving as slow as you can go is best. Once on final, moving as fast as you can is best. At least, that is when the German ATC controllers squawk at me the least. The airfield layout is also kind of strange. They frequently have you take the taxiway between the runways, and then cross back over the runway that you landed.

The thing that makes Frankfurt a challenging airfield as far as pilots are concerned is the fact that the parallel runways are not spaced far enough apart to allow simultaneous approaches. The airplanes have to land and takeoff staggered. PRM (Precision Runway Monitoring) doesn't exist outside of America (yet).

I do love going to good ole' Deutchland, however!

Do you think it's because of all the "Fokkers" they have there?
