The media uses the term "insurgent" and carefully edits out the facts to lead readers to a desired conclusion. Some edited facts: The terrorists in Iraq are killing more Iraqis than Americans. The Terrorists in Iraq aren't often from Iraq. Iraqi citizens are fighting the Terrorists. Americans have been closing down Forward Operating Bases for over a year.

A patriot is someone who defends their country by engaging the enemy army.
The terrorist insurgents in Iraq are fanatics who are coming into Iraq from Syria, Saudi, Iran, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan and god knows where else to inflict slaughter on anyone who disagrees with their fundamentalism. Its nothing to do with patriotism or being an Iraqi.
The insurgents are killing thousands more Iraqi civilians, and fellow Muslims than they are hurting coalition troops, as well as starting a civil war between Sunni, Baathist, Kurd and Shii'te.
One mans murdering fanatic, is just a murdering fanatic.

Not necessarily. A terrorist is someone that kills or destroys to draw attention to his cause. A patriot could be defined as someone that shows a lot of love for his country. There doesn't have to be destruction or death involved.
In the end it boils down to the definition of both.

I'd prefer not to catorgorize someone who is willing to die or go to war against enemy combatants for his country with someone who is willing to commit mass murder of innocents for his cause.
