Some pictures show Jesus bowing His head, some show His eyes lifted upward.
I pray both ways. When I am humbly seeking G-d, I bow my head. When I am praising and exalting Him, I lift my head and hands upward. Sometimes, when I'm driving, I can't do either so I just watch the road while I pray.
I know He hears us no matter what. He knows our hearts.

We bow our heads out of reverance to God. It's a way of saying, "You are good and holy and we are not as good as you."
It is a common theme in the Bible to look away or be overcomed by reverance while in the presence of God. Also, it says that if one were to look directly at God's face that they would immediately die.
It's not a diehard rule though and it is also appropriate to look up and pray like Jesus did. Or even to the left or to the right. The direction is not important as God sees the heart.

When Jesus looks up while praying He is looking at His Father who stated after Jesus was baptized "This is My Son whom I am well pleased". We are sinners plan and simple and we are not worthy to see God's face. Someday when we get to Heaven we'll be able to see God face to face but while on earth....never.
As for "oz" and his comment...pray for him to find God.

Evangelical Christians pray looking up. The "head down" stance is adopted by most others to show submissiveness to their God.

We pray heads down, because of humility and , sometimes, shame for our sins, whereas Jesus preayed head up because it was His father he was refferring to and because as far as ia know had no sins to be shamed of. He was much closer to God than all of us are so he could "face" Him. Good question....

Well, Jesus lived 2000 years ago, I don't think anyone knows how He prayed.

Maybe because he's looking at his Father, so it's OK, but the Old Testament says no one is to look upon the face of God, so we bow our heads.

Because we as people bow our heads in prayer as a symbol of being ashamed of our sins.

Jesus was God's literal son and was sinless...why have shame? he could ACTUALLY SEE his Father..which is MORE proof that they are separate beings...which could also be a reason!!!
