The Mystery People who look to Citrucel to keep them regular may have wondered why some versions of the fiber laxative have vanished from store shelves. Turns out GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) told retailers to pull the product last month, citing what its Web site calls "some unexpected production problems." But the company waited three weeks after that to explain the move to customers.

The Culprit According to GSK spokeswoman Jennifer May, the company found 43 pieces of copper wire in samples it tested after its supplier of dicalcium phosphate alerted GSK that something might have gone awry. The paper-thin, flexible wires, May said, ranged in length from four millimeters (about the size of a ladybug) to 49 (almost two inches). Citrucel comes in several forms; the wire was found only in the orange-flavored and orange-flavored sugar-free powders.
