I don't know if it's in the Quran but I'd been taught to use the left. Apparently you do everything with the right and only use the left on the loo.

It may not be in the Koran, but it is in the culture. As a joke one friend of mine tried to think of the best way to insult a Turk (a Muslim nation). He came up with using your left hand to touch a person's teeth and say, "You have some food stuck here."
Why do you think the left hand is called the sinister hand? At one point every culture had no access to toilet paper so they had to use their hands. The culture would create a code of ethics to cover this. After all you don't want to shake hands with someone who just got out of the john. If they have dysentery or cholera then this could save your life. Since most people are right handed, its is natural for the code of ethics to make the left hand the hand used to wipe one’s self clean with.
Don’t blame Muslims for using their left hand to wipe, at one point your ancestors did as well.
