I take methadone for pain, I've been on it for over five years now. I take 70 mgs a day, plus 120 mgs of morphine for breakthrough pain. What are the long term effects of taking these drugs? And if I'm not getting the relief I used to get, should I ask my doctor to "UP" my dose or should I look for another pain medication?

I've also seen a pain specialist and went to a pain clinic for almost two years. After my third surgery and still in pain there wasn't much more they could do. Even Physical Therapy wasn't giving me any relief. I am at maximum medical benefit, the pain is Chronic.

IF YOU ARE SUFFERING FROM CHRONIC PAIN YOU NEED TO SEE A PAIN MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST. MY FATHER WHO ALSO HAS BEEN TAKE METHADONE FOR PAIN RELIEF WAS JUST TOLD HE NEEDS TO SEE A CARDIOLOGIST FOR POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO HIS HEART DUE TO USING METHADONE. HE NOW ALSO HAS ADDICTION ISSUES FROM INCORRECTLY (SELF-DOSING) TAKING PAIN KILLERS I.E. CODEINE,MORPHINE, METHADONE, AND OTHERS. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR BODY WILL BUILD UP A TOLERANCE TO ALL PAINKILLERS, UPPING YOUR DOSAGE WILL ONLY MAKE YOU AN ADDICT,

Methadone comes as a tablet, a dispersible tablet (can be dissolved in liquid), a solution (liquid), and a concentrated solution (liquid that must be diluted before use) to take by mouth. For the relief of pain, it may be taken every 4–12 hours. If you take methadone as part of a treatment program, your doctor will prescribe the dosing schedule that is best for you. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take methadone exactly as directed.

I pray that you build up tolerance to the pain or that you be healed. This pain is unimaginable, I know, I am there! I have taken it all. Seems as if it is hopeless at times. I draw strength from God and keep going. I do find relief at times, however, I fight the side effects ( drowsiness, itching, constipation, and having to travel over 80 miles one way to pain management each month). I do hope on day to be free of this pain!

There are so many other "severe pain only" drugs out there I would explore those w/ your M.D. Good Luck in a low pain future, Scrumdiliumches

you need to build up your tolerance to the pain not the medication.
