My persian cat had the same thing and I was told it was connected to his kidneys, of which he died of kidney failure. Is this connected. He drinks lots of water and passes about the same amount (no problems in that area). We feed him frolic and leave it up to him to decide how much he wants (he is not a greedy dog) Once a day we give him meat of some variety usually winalot but he doesn't aways eat it, I think he wants to eat what we eat usually but thats not the issue. I'm more worried about the fur thing.

I am a registered Vet Tech. and a groomer. The brown fur under the black sounds like undercoat which is perfectly normal (no worries). Drinking increased water could be an issue if it has been a sudden or even a gradual increase from what your pooch usually intakes. Go to your vet and ask to have a routine blood screen done with a urinalysis. If your catching Renal failure early there are a lot of things you and your vet can due to help prolong his life.
Persians are predisposed to kidney failure so ask your vet if this is true of the Boarder Collie breed

My dog has two shades of fur. He is a black St ,Bernard. He has some brown under his fur only vi sable when he is wet. The vet said a lot of dark dogs have this light fur under dark fur & not to worry.U worry when they start losing the top fur. That is a sign of illness.

I have two spaniel cross labradors and they are black with white chests. One of them has always had a brownish tint to the fur on his ears. The other is big and fluffy.
Recently whilst grooming him we have noticed that he has got an increasing amount of brown fur under his black "top coat".
Our vets have said that it is like an under layer and is similar to a summer coat that other animals get - such as donkeys shed their winter coat in warmer weather - it is also thinner than his normal coat.

sound like your dog is tri-coloured. Not a prob. But if you are really worried then maybe you should take him to the vets for peace of mind. If your dog is otherwise healthy I would not worry. Dogs and cats are very different.

You should see a vet, drinking lots of water can mean some kind of infection.
