Depends where you are. In the Orient (e.g., China), Day 1 is Monday. In other places, it is Sunday. The reason is either cultural relativity or arbitrary.

The week starts on Sunday.
This is because Christians believe that Christ was raised on the first day of the week after the Sabbath (which is Saturday). That's why most Christian events are held on Sundays and that is also why Sunday is the day of rest.
It is also because the Jewish religion says Moses wanted the seventh day of the week to be the day of rest (AKA the Sabbath), so Sunday would start the week.
That's also why we have a weekend... because both Saturday and Sunday are considered days of rest for different religions.
Hope this helps!

The Bible clearly makes the Sabbath the last day of the week, but does not share how that corresponds to our 7 day week. Yet through extra-biblical sources it is possible to determine that the Sabbath at the time of Christ corresponds to our current 'Saturday.' Therefore it is common Jewish and Christian practice to regard Sunday as the first day of the week (as is also evident from the Portuguese names for the week days). However, the fact that, for example, Russian uses the name "second" for Tuesday, indicates that some nations regard Monday as the first day.
In international standard ISO-8601 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has decreed that Monday shall be the first day of the week.

The week officially starts on a sunday because the biblical Sabbath lasts from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset. That is where most cultures derived their week from.
In modern terms however the working week runs from monday to friday so most people see Monday as the start of their week.
