First off, there is a good chance that you don't need to lose weight. Unless your family doctor has told you and your parents that you are overweight, I'd reconsider this idea that you need to do so. Kids are growinig - (I grew another inch in height in COLLEGE!) That means that your body prepares the tissue for the bone. Translated, you may experience periods where you feel a little heavier than before because you have some extratissue and blood vessels and even a little fat (EVERYBODY has fat - it's necessary for life) right before your bones begin a growth spurt. If you don't have that weight - if you diet it away before the bones grow, then you may well stunt your growth (which means you will end up a shorter adult than you would have been - not a good thing. Really, it's not.)

Another thing that can come from dieting so young is a screwed up metabolism, meaning that your body will not process the food that you DO eat in a very good manner. That, too, can screw up a whole LOT of things - including your growth rate.

How do I know this ? Ah, because I WAS a fat kid. (A fat kid as told by my doctor - not something I assumed.)

The best bet - really, really, really - the best bet is to learn NOW how to "eat right." I can't even BEGIN to gell you how much that will serve you well in your life. (Because, again, I was a fat kid, had bad food habits - used starvation diets to get weight off - and pretty much ruined that part of my life FOREVER. Even now - years later.) Yes, learn to eat right.

Schools are nortorious for unbalanced food. Unbalanced nutritionally. You'd think, wouldn't you?, that a school would ensure that their portions are proper and the nutrients were balanced, but often that is not the case. (And even if it is, kids often just eat what they "like" instead of what they need.) If you eat a wide variety of foods, you will find yourself happier as an adult.

Oh, don't you just hate it when adults give you advice like this ?

Anyway, if you have been medically diagnosed as too heavy, at school, eat a balanced meal - eat all the fruit offered (stay away from fruit slices in a heavy, thick juice - those are just empty calories.....eat fresh fruit.) Eat only half of any breads they offer. Eat half of the meat. Stay away from fried foods. Drink ALL the milk and more if you can (great for that bone growth I was talking about!). And, most important, keep moving - walk to school if you can, take a walk with your mother at night - walk the dog - run, jump, play, sweat and have fun! This will keep your system running right which will help your body use the food it gets and keep you a happier you.

Sorry, but not much at the cafeteria will help you loos weight. However, there are things you can do to help with the process. Your diet (how you eat is very important), in conjunction with some form of exercise. While at school, try to stay away from the junk foods (chips, candy) and if you have to, pack a healthy lunch. Remember, the brown bag lunch is in style. It shows you are confident about who you are and aware of good nutrition.
Good Luck

Salad, soups, veggies, fruit, low fat milk. Think you should look at exercising also..is the best way to lose weight. I know I know...is hard but if you look at all fit people..they all exercise religiously at least 3 times a week

focus on the natural items- salads (watch the cheese and dressings), grilled chicken, fish, turkey, fresh fruit- stay away from the horribly processed items, deep fried, and full of sugar- also stick with water or low-fat milk- juices are super high in sugar and sugar = calories- the biggest item to stay away from is soda- there is no nutritional value there plus it does nothing but destroy your growing body

From what I remember of my cafeteria, I think you are better off bringing stuff from home.

Take your lunch. Unless they have changed, I have no ideas. Of course all cities and states are not identical, but the general criticism of serving of fried foods and high calorie, and high carbohydrate foods persists.
