This is from a book, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". In the story a computer called Deep Mind was asked the meaning of "Life, the Universe, and Everything". Its answer, which took one million years to arrive at, was "42". When asked to explain the computer said the original question did not have enough information and that the askers should rephrase the question.

The freaky thing about it though is that Douglas Adams may have been right.
The Number 42 shows up an alarming number of times in ALL fields of science.
42 is the answer, we're just not sure what the question is.

As far as I understand Douglas Adams, especially after reading the whole series, I think it was just his way of saying that there really isn't an all encompasing answer to "Life, the universe, and everything." Later in the series it is found that the question is "What is six times seven?" Take that for what you will.

That is a statement made in the book "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." by Douglas Adams. It is a fun read. You'd enjoy it. There is also a movie based on the book.

nobody knows the meaning of life, we are way too shallow and unknowing to answer that. so if anybody says the meaning of life is 42 i dont think they were serious, unless they are dimensional travelers from the future, but i doubt that ;)
