Because to believe in God means to give up the concept that we rule the things around us. It is a frightening proposition to have to let go of that feeling of self-control, and acually place ourselves in the care of another by acting in faith, not an easy thing to do..

Thankfully,
Every religion has underlying similarities. The truth is, God isn't just the God of Christians, the God of Scientology, or just the God of Islam, Buddhism, etc, etc. God is the God of everybody, no matter what religious faith you practice.
Sure, some beliefs may seem pretty twisted in other peoples eyes, but because of ones understanding of their own faith, it may seem perfectly normal to them. The other truth is, that unless you can see God face to face, hear him/her (whichever you prefer) audibly when you call him/her, and know that God is truly with in you by personal experience, not because of coincidences or from some small, still voice in the back of your mind, then you don't really know if God is real, but you believe, you hope. ( I don't blame atheists for doubting God)
That's perfectly fine. That's why there are so many different religions, ideas about what or who God is, cults, etc, etc, ad nauseum. People don't know for sure, people are insecure, and want something stable to hold on to. Plus, some people may have had bad experiences with one religion, and may come to question their religion, and inevitably explore other ideas.
All of that is okay. It's natural. I suggest that you, or anybody with an open mind, or even closed mind go to www.godsdirectcontact.org, or www.godsimmediatecontact.com. There you will find someone who has direct knowledge of God, and can explain why people are so willing to believe anything, but God, as you put it.
Take care, :)

It's only your perspective that different beliefs are "fake".
Christianity, itself, has been twisted into what people want it to be. Look at all the different sects of Christianity there are! I mean, if Christianity is the true way, then which SECT of Christianity is the true way? Because every sect has a different set of rules, different interpretations of the Bible, and different reasons for damnation.
Also, as with any religion, including Christianity, they're all cults. A Cult simply means "A following of people".
I personally think it's hilarious how you're sitting there on your high-horse telling other people they're wrong because they believe differently -- which is the exact opposite of what Jesus taught people to do to non-believers. Jesus taught about tolerance, not Judgment 101. Heh, it's pretty sad that I, a mere Pagan, am teaching the lessons of Christ to a Christian.
Maybe you should do your homework first before you nitpick other beliefs, sweety.

There are more goddesses and gods than just the christian deity. We are not pre-programmed to believe in that particular deity nor any deity at all if that is what we so choose.
If you look at historically don't you think any religion at it's inception would be given cult status by any already established religion.

Unfortunately you didn't define God. The real problem is that "God" is a very nebulous idea and no religion accurately represents him (in assuming you are a christian, how do you explain all of the constant contradictions throughout your belief system? i.e. "Love one another as I have loved you." Yet you believe you should mistreat and be bigots toward anyone that doesn't believe exactly as you want them to?)

Paradise got it right--the accountability issue. People don't want to be held responsible for something so they'd rather believe anything else to appease their conscience. I think it's quite funny how you upset people by being so "judgmental" and unknowing about your beliefs. I guess they've never read all the verses in the Bible about witnessing to others or where Jesus himself cast out demons. Yeah, Jesus sure is "tolerant" of other beliefs!

All of your examples are based on God, as far as I know. Most organised religions are based on power and fear as much as they are based on God.
Why are people so willing to believe in anything except rational thought?

Instant gratification. The reward for following God is obtained at the end of one's life. The reward for being a kabbalist, for example, is improved luck and other bullsh**/placebo througout your life.

Most people are gullible, worried, and in need of something they think will resolve their fers and needs.
Some choose magic, some choose fairy tales. All of your examples including your idea of god, fall in one of those two categories.
