We are a family of 4 in NC, and would like to travel somewhere "Interesting" for christmas vacation.
We're thinking of keeping it relatively close (driving distance), but really have no guidelines we've come up with yet.
Any suggestions?

Well I pulled up Google Maps to get an idea where things were in relation to Raleigh NC ..just as a reference city.
Would a straight trip on the freeway, 12 hours too far to go for you? you could consider Disney World and Universal City in Orlando Florida, for one thing the weather is great in Florida during Xmas, and Disney world outdoes itself during Christmas, the whole family would have things they could do, you all could pick a package out of the American Express brochures or just go directly to the Disney World website and select one. They have various resorts on the property all joined by a monorail, so if you stay at one of the resorts you never have to worry about driving or waiting in lines to get in the park, because you just hop the monorail, and its free. If you are not familiar with using Google Maps to get driving directions email me back and I will walk you through it. Driving wise its a straight shot, catch 301 out of Raleigh, which apparently turns into 405 direct to Orlando.

I took the kids there a couple of years ago during Xmas and they had a blast, so did I for that matter. If you decide to go make sure you look at 'packages' that include park entry fees for a week and all day rides for the family, because on the long run they are cheaper than daily tickets.

I like the New York idea.

Make it Manhattan, and plan to attend a show on Broadway, or some other entertainments. Do some stuff you just don't get to do everyday. Make some really fabulous memories.

Check with a travel agent, and see what's going on there at this time of year. He / She may be able to help you put together a very satisfying package.

we got a really nice condo with a fire place, hot tub, and 2 floors + another side apartment for a week - a timeshare we got on ebay, but it was in Sedona, Arizona, and it averaged out to be 46 dollars a night- thats 4 double beds + 2 more in the side room. & 2 kitchens. very nice.

Hands down, Disney World. We make an annual trip there, and we will never tire of it. For us, there is no such thing as too much disney............and we would go more often if we lived closer. The 3 of us live in WI
