Consider making the iron vibrate (isolated from the handle?) to improve interaction with cloth being ironed. Vibrations can be adjusted as to strength and cycle. Presently you must move the iron back and forth to smooth out the cloth. Make the iron somehow interactive with the ironing board (perhaps a magnetic attraction to a steel board top. Good luck!

1. An intelligent fabric sensor -
--which identifies the type of cloth (ex:- cotton, polyester etc.)and adjusts the temperature accordingly. (No need of controlling temperature manually.)

2. Increased distribution of heat over the surface

3. A timer to switch off the iron if it's kept unattended for a long time.

Rather then heating up a large mass of metal use some light weight material using electronic heat control so that the heat up and cool down period is much shorter and the 'iron' lighter to lift and move. Make it = to what microwave ovens did for cooking. Make a fortune, send me a finders/idea fee ;-)

One big thing would be a humidity sensor and a rapid cool off to prevent clothing or anything else from being burnt from either leaving it on or holding too slow. You could propose IR heat and a way to dissipate it. Quicker warm up and cool down times would be a bonus in today's age

Make it fully automatic so I just stack clothes in one end and pull 'em out the other when they're done. Or open a door and put them in.
