Not really. You must exercise to be sure you have lost all of the fat you can healthily lose from your body. Once this is done, you will see the muscles of your stomach if you are paritcularly lean. Doing sit ups will TIGHTEN and FIRM the muscles of the stomach, but it will not burn fat. By tightening the muscles you could effectively slim down a bit. But by doing aerobic exercise to burn BODY fat, you will also reduce your waist size in time. You CANNOT SPOT-REDUCE FAT. It comes off from where your genetic self tells it to!

Your waist will get tighter with crunches and sit-ups, and may become smaller, but not much. You have to do Cardio to get rid of the fat on top of the muscles to make it smaller. I have to admit that doing too many sit-ups may make your waist larger. Pre Army my waist was 27 inches with little muscle definition, after all the sit-ups I did, I had a great looking six-pack, but my waist was 28 inches. That may be based on genetics though. But definitely keep up with the stomach strengthening. Not only will your abs look great in the long run, but it will reduce the chances of back problems and will ease the pushing in child birth (if that's something in the future for you.)
Oh, and working any muscle does burn fat and colories, just not as quickly as cardio exercises. So, I suggest adding some running or speed-walking into the mix if you haven't already.

Yeah, excercise balls are great, but I have found the best way to tone abs up, and keep them toned with minimal effort, is to do at least ten minutes of pilates three times a week. Get a DVD or go to a few classes to get started. Once you have mastered the breathing, which doesn't take long, you're away. It gives your body core stability, which means that even when you are unaware of it, you are using your abs to maintain the correct posture pretty much all the time, thus working them whatever you are doing. It also aligns the spine and lengthens your limbs, great stuff without breaking a sweat. And you can do it from home too. Also, it works really quickly, I noticed the change in my body after only three sessions.

There are a lot of heavy, bulky organs between your rib-cage and your pelvis, and if your core muscles are weak then these cause your waist to bulge. Strengthening your core muscles will support these organs better and improve your appearance and posture without any loss of fat. Losing the fat will help even more.
So...stomach exercises such as sit ups can make you slimmer.

Sit ups wont make your waist smaller very much. Do more cardio exercise so your body uses up your fat stores and you'll loose your fat around your waist.

mine did! I do about 150 every other day. remember your muscles need a rest day. it may make you bulge a bit if you don't pull in your lower stomach muscles first. don't do them fast either as this can build bulk. gentle controlled movements with your hands at your side not pulling on your head or neck is ideal. it's taken me a couple of years to get it how i want and definition on my abs. Keeping going. Swimming (Australian crawl style) is also good for the waistline.

I don't think so. This doesn't give any effort on the muscle. Best is to lie down on your back and lift your legs without bending your knees to a 40 degree angle and then lower it slowly. Your hands must stay close to the body.

Not really. You have to use a combination of things to get a smaller waist. Here's a link with lots of great info on how to trim your waist: http://ezinearticles.com/?A-Smaller-Waist-Can-Be-Yours&id=213928
