English is my first and best language; I'm also not up on chat lingo.
I think Yahoo! Answers is a good way to practice a language. (I use Y!A France and Germany for that a bit.)

I am not certain that I can say that I speak English fluently. I was not born to an English speaking family. When I became of age to attend school, I was ill prepared for the challenge of a new language. I was determined to speak as well as my peers and I was reading and speaking at a university level by fourth grade. I still find myself checking and correcting my written, as well as, my spoken words. No, I don't think that anyone speaks or writes nearly as well as they did ten years ago. I think that it almost isn't required, nor necessary. This new media-speak seems to have perpetuated and created a sub-language where anything goes. I find it distressing that all the effort I went through to assimilate has been undermined by a rudeness that has become, by and large, totally acceptable. What is even more disturbing, to my chagrin, is that I am being roped into this sub-culture and find myself yielding to the abbreviated forms that are so prevalent in Internet chat. It really makes you wonder about the evolution of language, doesn't it?

English is my first language. I agree that there are spelling issues, but that's not just for Yahoo! Answers, but for every forum-type of page on the internet. But I would guess that most people who learn English as a second language actually spell better than a lot of native English speakers, because they're actually making the effort to learn the language. Us native English speakers speak and write without thinking much about the words that we use, and we focus more on the sounds than the letters. Most people who learn a language probably learn how to write and read in that language long before they feel totally comfortable speaking it it, so they're definitely thinking more about how the words look. At least that's how it is for me when I learn a language, and I rarely misspell words in other language because I've been looking at them in textbooks and dictionaries much more than I've been saying them and hearing them.

You are most definitely right! There is so much bad spelling, grammatical errors or just folks that don't have a good command of the English language. Of course they could be from other countries and struggling with English. I love proper English, so here is one writer of stories answering you!

i dont think i do. im extremely singaporeanized with heavy filipino accent still. But btw, speaking fluent english and learning to write and spell well is not the same. There are tons of people who may write very well in english but when they speak, its either they stutter or fall heavily on accents.
