In order to maintain a healthey flow of golfers on the golf course, specifically keeping rounds limited to 4 and 1/2 hours or less, courses strategically schedule start times so that, in a perfect world, there is not back up. Keep in mind that some golfers play slower rounds and some faster. Additionally, even specific holes take longer or shorter amounts of time to play. For instance, generally, it will take longer to play a par 5 than a par 3. The course takes an average and sets tee times accordingly.

Varies from course to course, but usually has to do with the almighty dollar. Private clubs tend to have more time between starting times, like ten minutes, because of the fewer players and the fact that greens fees are already paid. But at public courses where players usually pay as you play, they want to be able to squeeze in as many groups as possible during the day, setting their tee times at 8 minute intervals, trying to make as much money as they can. Eventually things get all backed up anyway and your 8:36 a.m. tee time means you'll be teeing of sometime after 9, and you're in for another 5-1/2 hour round. Yippee!

I can answer that question. First of all golf courses want to allow groups plenty of time to hit. They might allow a four minute interval between groups. Secondly they also consider backup. I can explain why backup occurs. First of all most golfers think they are better than they really are. Let's suppose these four men in a group are waiting for the group in front of them to move out of the way. These four men believe that they are good. They might wait until the group in front is 350 years away because they are afraid of hitting them. We all know that few golfers can hit the ball that far and these men are surely not the ones to do it. These golfers know that they cannot hit the ball that far and as a result of their ignorance everyone behind them has to wait extra long. This type of thing happens quite often, believe me I have spent plenty of time at golf courses to know.
For those of you who have to wait hours to play blame those assholes who think they own the golf course.

Because anyone who participates in this self-destructive practice posing as a sport is already slightly insane....the tee times make perfect sense if you're slightly off your rocker.
