The grade of portland cement (a hydraulic cement commonly used in construction) refers to the compressive strength of a mortar cube prepared with that cement and measured after 28 days of curing. The strength of a mortar cube made with pure cement of grade 33 is expected to be at least 33 MPa (Million Pascals) after it is cured for 28 days. Similarly, the strength of the cube made with Grade 53 cement is expected to be at least 53 MPa.
