There are some very good answers here except for one and you should just ignore airplaneman. Call around. I used to have animals dumped where I lived and when the vet found out what I was doing he just charge for the meds on the strays that I brought in. Explain your situation and they maybe will help or know of a teaching vet hospital in your area. Good Luck

I had the same problem when I moved to a small town. Just get on the phone and call around. I did. I found a wonderful vet that is about saving the animal, and not the money. Over the years, I have found numerous ways to save money on medicine, and preventives. Try to ask your local SPCA for a reasonable vet. I wished you lived closer to me. I sure could help you out more.
Take care

If you are able to travel a little north, Nine Lives foundation will probably help.

Another thing to consider is Care Credit. See if the Vet has it. I'm not exactly sure about it, but I think if your vet has it, you can get it and then pay some rediculously low amount like 5 dollars a month until the bill is paid off.

Good suggestions, and in my small town there is an organization called Friends of Animals that helps low-income pet owners. In a large California city, you probably have a nearby Humane Society or ASPCA office to call. Or ask vet for advice. Don't give up.

What a heartless response, airplaneman4, best hope you don't need medical help when you are broke.
I don't know about your town, but in Alabama some of the vets will offer a very reduced fee (with payments) on sick animals to low income people.
I know that is not much help, but I would call the vets and ask, it is still free to ask.
