because the most infamous terrorists today are islamic fundamentalists.
Sure, there are irish terrorists, latin terrorists, asian terrorists, but the the ones that want to ATTACK US are by in large muslim extremists.
It's not about racism at all. When was the last time an Irish terrorist bombed one of our embassies or beheaded an American?

Viewing the issue from your standpoint, it is understandable why people associate terrorism and Islam. However, you are far to general in defining 'people'. I think you primarily mean first world countries, i.e. United States, England and Australia. Not all people associate the two, for example, one could ask, if one was a muslim, 'Why do people associate infidels and Americans?'.
Therefore, Americans and other countries have a tendency to associate terrorism with Islam because to them the two are synonomous. This being brought about by media and news linking the two together continuously and powerfully. Be careful with what you are told to know, understand and take as the truth. The media is skewed to serve the purposes of the capitalist system.

When IRA fought, they were known as freedom fighters.
When Muslims fight, they're known as terrorists.
When the Christians of East Timor sought freedom, they were labeled as oppressed people wanting freedom.
When Kashmiri Muslims sought freedom, they were labeled as traitors and terrorists
When a nun is covered from head-to-toe, she's respectable.
When a Muslim woman is covered from head-to-toe, she's an extremist Muslim.
You see, buddy, even if a Muslim saves a Christian from drowning in the sea and drowns himself in the process, the west would say that the Muslim didn't went to save the Christian, but steal his shorts.
Western media is run by Jewish lobby. They print what they deem fit for their own benefits. The people read those newspapers and form an opinion about Muslim organizations.
It's just like watching a movie. The villain is portrayed as a negative man, and the hero is portrayed as charming good fellow, hence the audience form an opinion at once about these respective characters. This is the same case with western journalism.
Muslims are just doing what the west compelled them to do, raise arms against the oppressive forces of the west. Otherwise, no one is so mad to take up arms, leaving behind his family, for no reason.

Islam is a legitimate religion that is perfectly credible and inspiring.
The problem is Usama bin Laden and his call to all Muslims to ban together and fight the 'infidels'. The war in Iraq is about putting a government in place that recognizes all religions and factions.
It is not the American people who associate the war on terror with Islam. It is the American people reacting to the madness of terrorism and those currently engaged in the Middle East insurgency.
The lunacy of bin Laden relies heavily upon Islam/Muslim followers. Muslims were killed on 9-11, as were other people of different nationalities and religions. America has never fought a religious war.
We believe in the separation of church and state. No one belief has any priority against any other belief. As Americans we are all front line soldiers, supporting our troops.
When one American carries a gun to defend this nation, we all carry a gun to defend this nation. Anyone who doesn't or refuses to carry a weapon to defend the United States of America should be deported...ASAP
Religion in the United States of America should never be a consideration not to defend this nation. We are all Americans. We serve as Americans, not members of any religious sect.
I'd like to believe that...I really would.

When you kill civilians in their homeland without first declaring war on the country its considered terrorism. Muslims have cornered the market on terrorism. They've had tons of practice and they've gotten pretty good at it. Sure there are terrorists who are not Islamic, but as a group Muslims have killed more people in this particular fashion than any other group in recent history.

There are bad sects in every group. Because of the terrorists who claim to be Muslim, those who are ignorant of the true Muslim faith see all Muslim as terrorists.
It is no different with the LDS religion. Only a break off portion of the religion, not the true LDS religion, believe in multiple marriage partners and force young women into marriage. Because of a small highlighted sect of people, the whole religion is given a bad name.
It is no different than Catholic Priests and Alter boys.
That is why people should seek the truth and not go through their lives following the media like sheep.

well due to the false info about the 9/11..anyway i think people should watch the re-opening of 9/11..they tell u the detail about how the building collapse and did everything that happen caused by the muslim terrorist..which is not at all..
Anyway..respecting and knowing one religion can help us to understand the norms and values about the religions and the people who follow it.
Being ignorance and listen to one sided story will make the whole thing wrost.
Respecting or knowing other people religions doesnt mean that we are interested in one or wanted to convert to the religions but to make us know why certain thing can be done and cant be done by the follower.

i think people associate the two because the media insists on it, and people these days are so afraid and paranoid, they just believe without even questioning the facts. if you look at why and how america invades muslim countries - with little facts and no hard evidence in the end, you will see, that the media makes it so, that it didnt matter. and i think it all boils down to the fact that in the western worlds pursuit for freedom- they cant allow other people to practise their idea of freedom as it clashes with theirs. Tolerance really - i am muslim, i am not a terrorist, but i know too many people who struggle to understand my life choice - just because it does not meet their idea of freedom.
ignorance fuels fear, and free thinking people should strive to see behind the smoke screens being shown to the world.

a brief view at the history of it all.
first, the US govt bombed their own country after years of bombing muslim countries. then they blame the muslims. labeling then, the terrorist.
then the muslim gets bloody pissed and freaking frustrated for being blamed then attacked for something they didn't do. then they really went and bombed embassies and churches etc. now confirming their status as terrorist.
to make matters worst, some dude drew a picture of a man highly respected by the muslim with a bomb on his head. (FYI even a respectable image of this man in a mosque is NOT even allowed, what more a low-humor cartoon)
now pissed as hell, the muslims react even more violently. creating a now popular image of... wait for it... "Muslims equals Terrorist"
of course personally, i would associate any terrorism, mass murders and killing prior to and during 9/11 to the christians themselves. but then i'm just looking at hard facts. what do i know...
