Like color TV was added to B&W TV in the mid '60s, stereo was added to FM radio several years after FM broadcasting first began.

In recent years, stereo has likewise been added to AM broadcasting, at least by the FCC. There's no technical reason why stereo can't be added to an AM signal. However, AM lately has been relegated to mostly 'talk radio', instead of music, and very few stations/radio manufactureres have adopted it.

It's kinda like adding Dolby 5.1 to 8-track tapes...who cares?

stereo gives better quality. In the same condition, frequency modulation has better resistance to noise than amplitude modulation. so, if the point is to get better transmission quality, why implement stereo to AM. Logically, you will pair the better with the better.
