The first is a specialist unit while the latter a special one. Understand? The SAS are specifically trained for the purpose of commando operations. The Foreign Legion is simply a general military 'division' comprised of non-French citizens led by French officers and exists for the purpose of providing military service in areas are in the gray zone. Sort of Gitmo is to the US... So if your question is which are the more potent in terms of warfare skills I'd say the comparison doesn't make sense - since the SAS would be outdone in many areas by the Legion and vice versa. I'd also have to assume the Legion has commando's just as lethal if not more potent than the SAS.
In the art of warfare potency is only measured by the ability to get the job done - and I believe they both do a fairly good job at that. The men who serve in both outfits should be equally proud to wear their berets.

The SAS is completely different from the FFL. The FFL is essentially normal infantry (some Airbone), while the SAS is a true "Special Operations" outfit. You cannot compare the two at all. For example, if you joined the British Army you have to serve a minimum of two years before you can even apply to join the SAS. You will get guys who join the British Army, Apply for the Paras (The Parachute Regiment sorta = 75th Rangers) make the _tough_ course, spend two years with them, apply for SAS and attempt the selection and fail it. And yet, if you were comparing the FFL to a unit in the British Army, a better (not perfect, but better) comparison would be the Paras.

Totally different.

The SAS is one of the elite Special Forces units in the world and have proven themselves to be at the top of the class over and over again.

The French Foreign Legion is essentially a high quality air mobile infantry unit similar to the British Parachute Regiment, or U.S Rangers and should be compared with them.

What is certain however is the the Foreign Legion training regime is very tough, and their ruthlessness in battle in well known, even when they are fighting civilians in Frances North African colonies.

Yes. The SAS is similar to US Special Forces (Green Berets, SEAL's). Not to discredit the French Foreign Legion, the training of the SAS is much more specialized.

Who makes up the British SAS? It is the elite soldiers. The French Foreign Legion, while they are probably tough, the units are composed of those who want to disappear, maybe some have criminal histories, maybe some have no other opportunities presented to them. Also, both of them have very different roles so it is hard to compare them.

There is actually no way to know, unless they where to actually attacked each other. both groups of special forces are massively capable and they are amonst the best in the world at what they do.

There is so much inter-working and collaboration between groups of special forces these days, and they often go on training exercises together that the differences are becoming smaller and smaller. The SAS has been seconded out to train other nations special forces to the degree that, other nations are developing skills on a par with the SAS now.

I'd say the SAS is better. They are exclusively a special operations outfit. The legion is more like the American Marine Corps. It is more oriented to conventional warfare, but with serious special operations elements.

It depends on the mission at hand, they are trained differently so they will approach a mission differently. Its like comparing apples to oranges. However people have favorite fruits. I favor the SAS better, because of their vast experience, and weapons training.
