The medical term is "Cholecystectomy". It is not a major procedure like it used to be where they had to cut a 7 inch hole into you to get it out; they now do it laproscopically, and the scars are minimal as in the healing time.

When I had mine done the largest cut was to just below my belly button about an inch long, one just below my sternum and one on the right hand side just below the bottom of my last rib and they uses gases go "blow" up the area so the can work with mini cameras and remove it through the hole near the belly button.

It is done on an outpatient basis and only takes an hour or so and you can go home a few hours afterwards. I was off work for a few days, but younger people I know that have had it done have gone back to work or school the next day.

The most pain after the surgery was not from the surgery itself, it was from the gas that they used to blow up the area and the pain was between my shoulder blades and others that I know that have had this done have the same complaint.
