It depends on what you are fishing for. If you want ultra light tackle and pole you fish for Bream and Blue Gill.
If you fish for Bass you want a Medium Heavy Pole.
The brand of reel varies depending upon the fisherman.
I prefer Shimano mostly, but I use several types from Mitchel and Shakespeare. Which ever you choose, you want zero anti reverse.

How much are you willing to spend ? start with GLommis $250- $350 for the rod, or get a bass pro combo for $100-$200 that are pretty good and low end go to walmart and get a zebco rhino combo for probably $30.00. Pflueger has some great reel for around $70 for a spinning reel and $149 for a Bait caster, I have seven of them and love them. good luck.

Abu Garcia graphite rods

Quantum makes the best rods and reels. Zoom,Yumand and Culprit make the best softbaits.Strikeking,Bomber, and Xcalibur hardbaits are best of all.Trilene monofilament,Xps fluorocarbon and Stren braid.

shimano reels, berkely rods, eagle claw hooks, trilene fishing line, unless you are talking the high dollar stuff, but for the weekend fisherman, this is all you need.

for rods it is a toss-up between g-loomis and sage. reels difinately shimano.
