An ultrasonic toothbrush, like sonicare, but there are others (Braun, for instance) is best, as it really helps get rid of the plaque that causes those problems. An electric toothbrush thats not ultrasonic doesn't break up the plaque as well. I always dreaded the chipping away part of tooth cleaning, and ever since I've used an ultrasonic, there's, like, nothing! But you've still gotta floss.

In my 16 years as a dentist, the healthiest gums belong to toothpickers. You can do a very good job of "picking" your teeth with a manual tooth brush as well. Just press it into all the spaces between you teeth and down into the gum line. With practice you can become very quick handed. I really don't like the Sonicare as many users believe that "the sonic bubbles and action will break apart plaque below the bum line" That is very near to magic and I don't believe in magic. Even my $3000 ultrasonic toot cleaners have to be place below the gumline to work at all in those areas.

Also be carefull when you floss. Many people dig down between the teeth so hard that they "peel" the gums away from the tooth in between and often cut their gums. Yeah, it hurts so good, but toothpicking does too but without all the damage.

I use Oral B which is the same as sonicare in principle. The rectangular head with the small vibrations seems to work better than the round ones that just go in a circular motion. Yes, they work better than normal brushing, but you have to use them dilligently and yes, you can stop receding gums. Continue to use floss.

Yes, it breaks up plaque better than a regular electric toothbrush. Plaque is a major cause of receding gums.

Sonicare is way better..because it massages your gum and cleans your teeth better then a regular electric tooth brush...i have been using my sonicare for 6 months and i don't have any gingivitis and my teeth look great...i highly recommend it
