Wow, there are so many! Here's one: Mendocino. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive north of San Francisco some of it through a beautiful redwood forest. I like to stay at the Sweetwater Spa in town and get a deal that includes a massage. (http://www.sweetwaterspa.com/) The town is right on the ocean with lots of nice shops and beautiful views with hiking and kayaking nearby.

Half moon bay, about an hour south of the city along the coastal highway. There are 7 left curves and 6 right going along the cliffs, or was it the other way around. Just try to stay on the road anyway.

You also might want to try a b&b inn in the Napa Valley and a morning balloon ride over the vineyards.

The Summer Shakespeare Festival happens in Santa Cruz this year from July 19th through September 3rd. You can see "As You Like It", "Pygmalion", and "King Lear". You might happen upon a surfing competition there as well like I did.

Head to the biggest, little city in the world - Reno.

Go for a hike in the Redwoods. A hearty, big breath of that clean, fresh air will last you awhile.
