If he is a religious person he may like the bible, Koran, etc on tape, there are many books and cd's available for sale and at the public library. The American Federation for the blind (or something like that) will lend easy to use audio players with a huge library of tapes. An old blind friend of mine loved nothing better than lottery tickets and an assortment of candies and fresh pastries, she also loved soft hats, socks and slippers...You could record his favorite people reading or telling stories, poetry, songs sung together in past, etc. for playback. This could be enjoyed and shown off, much like a photo album...I just got back from taking my 87 year old father-in law to gamble at Tahoe, it's his very favorite thing and casinos are very wheelchair accessible (even though I'm not sure I approve, so what!). Think of what interests him and find a way to give him some. I think a recorded"album" of jokes, greetings, memories, etc. from people in his life or even distant relatives from far away would be a really big hit...

You probably don't need to spend a lot of money - I've seen lots of things mentioned about MP3 players, etc in these answers, and to me that seems a little expesive for a man who probably has no interest in such material things. He would probably enjoy something simple like a yummy cake, maybe the books on tape thing, which I thought was a good idea, and just someone to spend time with. Take him outside...let him smell the flowers, listen to the birds, enjoy the sunshine for a little while. Elderly folks really love to be outside, even for just 30 mins. Sing him Happy Birthday, and watch the smile come across his face...he simply needs someone to remember him on his special day.

since i am in a wheelchair, it is hard for us to do a lot of things, and since he is also blind,he would not be able to see what you get him.
take him out for his birthday for a meal.
if he don't want to go out for a meal in public,
make him a meal at his home.
give him some cake and ice cream.
the MOST important, spend time with him, let him reminisce about old times, at his age, just having someone visit with him will make his day. and wish him a happy 80th for me even though i don't know him. they love all the wishes they get.

At this age, and considering his condition...he has probably outgrown the desire for matierial things. You should give him a gift of love and thoughtfulness. Something more intrinsic...so to speak. What about an audio recording of several of his family members talking about good times or memories they shared with him.
Get him comfy in a room and just let him listen and enjoy.

Probably, just buy him things that he's had throughout his life (things that he misses and would like to have again). Find old records, or maybe find things that he used to do when he was younger. Older people appreciate things like that. When I bought my grand father the orginal Nate King Cole record, he almost cried. Keep things like that in mind because I doubt that he would be interested in anything modern. Good Luck!!

A birthday card with a mini recorder. Then you and your family can recorder greeting in the card. When he open the card, he can hear all your voice.
You can buy this cards in some Japanese commodity shop in China Town. Usually expensive but quite good.

a rascal motorized wheelchair with bumper car fender thingies around it,
and a trip to the mall with a video camera to tape the hilarity that ensues.
seriously, think about it how much fun would that be if you were him?
(make sure it has a five point seat belt)

Books on Tape. I used to work for a blind elderly woman. She had books on tape & really enjoyed them. She also enjoyed it when friends & family would visit her & would read the bible to her. Sometimes time is the best present you can give, especially to an elderly person.
