Are you a hermit who's spend his entire life researching them and infiltrating their ranks? Free masons started as a guild of masons (brick layers). Sort of like an early worker's union. Today they are a fraternal organization, you must be invited and take oaths to join the brotherhood. People say all this weird stuff about them because they are very old and secretive so people make crazy assumptions but they are not satanic and no more cult-like than any christian religion.

My husband and his grandfather are masons, I know a little about it, but you can't know it all unless you actually become a mason. You can reasearch it and find out some history and information on it though, its pretty neat. There is a masons sign that is very distinct. Watch National Treasure. You will see the sign a lot on there, and it is a really good movie. Also check out this site:

a fraternal organization that supposedly started during th building of king solomons temple. it was started by the stone masons building the temple as a way to build their 'pagan' symbolism and rituals into the architecture to preserve it in the face of the one god (christianity) that was destroying their culture and religious beliefs. it has since ironically become a (mostly) christian fraternity, though there are three holy books one can swear the masonic oaths on, the bible, the kuran(sp?) and one other i forget which...
