I have seen some that do play AVI and MP4 so they are out there. Some DVD maufacturers prefer to save money on research and development by letting other companies do the ground work. Some ideas may be good but not readily accepted by the buying public, however, AVI and MP4 compatability is a good idea.

By waiting to see what interests the public manufacturers of the cheaper DVD players try to cash in without any expenditiure themselves on development. Basically, if you want something that has just reached the shop shelves, otherwise wait a while and get it cheaper later. The choice is yours.

Most consumer DVD players concentrate on playback of commercial and home video DVD's, however there are others that are more geared towards computer formats, so they will play DivX, MPEG, AVI, and possibly others - you just have to look for them online because due to their smaller target market most High Street shops aren't likely to stock them.
