is your child very active? if he is that's the answer. if not, is he have enough sleep or is he ever have a mid-day nap? the child can eat alot but wont gain weight because he/she over active and do not have enough sleep specially the mid-day nap. try to put your child on a sleeping and eatting schedule. make your child eat every meal on time( time you set for each meal), and put your child to bed the same way. try this method in two week and you could tell the different. good luck

Assuming your pediatrician has ruled out all the diseases that would cause concern (like Cystic Fibrosis and metabolic problems), then the answer is to feed your child a healthy diet, rich in vitamins from fresh fruits and veggies, good proteins (lean is ok but not totally necessary) with whole milk and good grains. Use this opportunity to establish solid eating habits so that a) you know your child is getting the nutrition needed to grow in a healthy manner, b) to avoid putting unnecessary calories into the diet (weight gain isn't nearly as important as nutrition) and c) so that your child learns now to eat the foods that will keep him healthy the rest of his life.
Please don't feel the need to feed your child more than he's willing to eat. Let him eat healthy foods when he's hungry and his body will do the rest. Otherwise, you'll risk turning your skinny little toddler into a chubby little preschooler. The first is always preferable to the second.

If your son is growing and healthy do not worry about it..you do NOT want to force feed him NOR give him a lot of "chocolate and sweets" as some people have suggested..this is not only unhealthy for your child, it will rot his teeth and can cause many other problems. IF he is not thriving, then he needs to see a doctor to find out if there is a medical problem that is keeping him from putting on weight, personally I think at about what 20 pounds or so, that is a pretty healthy weight for a child that age, don't worry....*smiles*

I am a nutritionist
you risk causing iron deficiency if you give your baby too much cows milk (it interferes with iron absorption) using regular formula would be a better idea to help him gain weight IF he was underweight, but he is not!
too many people see children that are overweight that they don't know what a healthy weight looks like. you wouldn't believe the number of parents I see because there child is "too skinny" and I have to explain to them "no your child needs to lose more" lol

I know how you feel! I have 3 children who are all tiny! Have you taken him to a pediatrician? (Sorry about the spelling if its incorrect!!!) Each of my three children were referred to one by my GP when they were babies. I took my baby boy last week to one, he is 8 months old and only 6.5kg! He needs to have blood tests taken to rule out any problems such as Thyroid Disfunction but the doctor says once they come back clear, not to worry, just keep monitering his weight to be sure he still puts it on. If you take your boy to your GP I'm sure they will do the same. I wouldnt worry if he seems healthy every other way and is eating well, most babies who are little (especially boys apparantly) often shoot up in their teens. You need to take into account your family health history look at yourself partner and grandparents what kind of build are they?
I know it's hard not to worry as I am the same especially when other people comment on your childs size, but as long as your doctor is not too concerned I wouldnt be either.
They say good things come in small packages and in our case that couldnt be more true right?

Please the normal expected weight for a 1 year old boy is 10 kg so he is bang on target. Please do not worry, you have done a good job so far
This is a weight chart for boys from birth to 3 years. It confirms that a one year old should be about 10kg with range from 8.5 kg to 12.5 kg.

NB. Age in months at the bottom of the chart
Weight in kg at the right lower border upwards

That is equivalent to 22 pounds, which is a normal weight for a child of that age. What is important about a child's weight is the size and weight of his parents. If the parents are slender the child likely will be as well. If his weight is proportionate to his height, and he is on track developmentally, then there is no problem.

10kg is the equivalent to 22 pounds. your son is at a very normal weight. my oldest son was only 8kg (18 pounds) at one year, but that is still in the 5th percentile. if the number 10 is what's worrying you then ask your doctor to give you his weight in pounds instead of kg's. the doctor will give you the info you need and if what they are saying is confusing then ask them to explain it. if you are worried because he looks skinny, don't. kids all look different and if he physically plays a lot then most of his weight is probably in muscle. you should always ask you childs doctor if you are unsure.
